Raw Materials Consumed
The company uses plastic granules, ball pen tips, ink, packaging material, springs and stamping foil as its raw materials. The imports mainly consist of quality ink and tips and this trend is likely to continue in view of the superior quality offered over the indigenous material.
Plastic Granules
Plastic granules are used for making the shells of the pens. linc uses five varieties of plastic granules :
Polypropylene (PP): The major Polylefin used in linc is Polypropylene. This polymer is hard, tough and easily mouldable. It is mostly used in the barrels of use - and - throw models. A random copolymer PP is also used in the barrel of Ocean Gel Pen model because of its transparency.
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) : HDPE is used for making mostly caps, plugs and adopters of ball pens of various models. This polymer is useful in those areas, where flexibility and strength both are equally needed.
Polystyrene (PS) : Polystyrene is a very versatile plastic that can be rigid or foamed. General-purpose polystyrene is clear, hard and brittle. It has a relatively low melting point. This is suitable for injection moulding applications. This material is used for making transparent barrels for many models of ball pens.
Styrene Acrylonitrile Copolymer (SAN) :This material is used for making transparent barrels of expensive pen for its greater strength and clarity.
Poly Acetal:This is a novel material because of its toughness and huge compressive strength. It is mostly used for the mechanism of the Pen.
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) : This is a terpolymer and useful for its toughness and lower density among all engineering plastic materials. linc uses this material for making clips, plugs and knobs for many models. It is an excellent choice for the electroplating application in different parts of ball pen.
TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) : It is a material that combines the properties of elastomers and thermoplastics. Elastomers are rubbers that can stretch easily. Thermoplastics can be molded easily with heat. It is used in the Grips of many models. It provides a better comfort in writing.
Polycarbonate (PC) : This is the toughest of all transparent plastic materials. Due to the hard and tough nature it is mostly used in the transparent caps of many models, where the locking mechanism lasts long even after repeated opening and closing of caps.
Masterbatchs: These are color concentrates and available in the form of granules. Colour pigments are mixed up with a high flow polymer vehicle, normally LDPE or EVA and now-a-days colour masterbatches are made to be used as colourant and accordingly it takes an important role in making coloured plastic parts
Tips
The company's dependency on Import of Tips has reduced significantly. This is mainly because of the superior quality Tips have started manufacturing in India only. Tip prices varied from Rs. 15/- to Rs. 150/- per gross, depending on their shape and configuration. Indian tips proved popular abroad and whenever exports rose, the paucity in the Indian market tended to strengthen prices.
Brass Tips : These types of tips are cheapest in the world. It is being produced for more than three decades. It is easy to produce and suitable for ordinary writing quality. Generally this tip is being used for economically priced pens. Normally it is made of Brass with 0.8 and 1 mm Stainless Steel ball.
BNP Tips (Brass Nickel Plated): These tips are produced for more than two decades. It is made with brass wire and then nickle plated to give a better look. This type tips are most acceptable in the world. It gives good and consistent writing quality. These tips are used for normal ball pens including retractable pens. These types are made with 0.7 to 1.20 mm ball dia. The balls used are SS & TC in these tips depending on the customer's need.
NS Tips (Nickel Silver): In the process of development to give a better writing quality a new Wire "NS" was developed in the last decade. It is comparatively expensive than brass wire. Mainly TC Ball is used with this wire. The life of this tip is more and writing quality is better as compared to other tips. It is mainly used for fine quality writing. Normally these types are made with 0.5 & 0.6 mm balls for fine writing but also 0.7 to 1.0 mm balls are used in this segment. The NS wire & TC ball are of very high quality and mainly imported from Switzerland, Germany and USA.
SS Tips (Stainless Steel Tips):This Tip is made of Stainless Steel wire with TC ball. This is the most expensive tip.
Gel Tips: Gel tips are used with Gel Ink, which is basically water-based ink and developed in mid 80's by Japan. Introduction for Gel Pen was strongly accepted by the world market and replaced the uses of fountain pens. For Gel ink only, this tips was developed with SS/NS wire and a special TC Ball and Ceramic, which gives a look of Ball Pen & writing pleasure of high quality fountain pen. It is made with 0.28 mm to 1 mm special ball.
Ink :
The choice of the ink supplier is critical to the quality of the pen. Different varieties of ink were also imported for feeding the wide array of the products. There are various varities of inks available. Few of them are as mentioned below:
linc uses several types of ink used in ball pens and Gel Pens:
High Viscosity Ink is very thick. It's the most common type of ink, the kind you find in most stick pens
Liquid Ink is held in a reservoir within the pen's barrel. It normally takes up most of the length and width of the barrel, giving greater ink capacity and therefore longer write-out length. This type of ink flows smoothly providing a constant colour density.
Oil-Based Ink is innovative new ink that is low in viscosity. It provides friction-free, vivid ink delivery, is water resistant, quick drying and smear-proof.
Gel Ink is thinner than oil-based ink giving a very smooth flow and dense colour. This allows brighter, more vivid colours to be produced.
Springs :
The spring is made of galvanized wire with customized specifications and it is used in Retractable ball pen.
Packing materials:
linc used BOPP (Bi axially oriented poly propylene) pouches for packing purposes. The company changed over to BOPP due to it being transparent and clear. Recently linc have also started using paper Boxes (Duplex) in good volume, as these boxes are environment friendly. Apart from this, linc also uses, PVC Boxes, Acetate boxes, Blister packing and Combo packs for various products.
Moulds :
For reasons of quality and consistency linc procured a major part of its mould requirement from Korea. Due to the increased production, the average requirement of modules per year has increased substantially from last few years. This expenditure is recurrent in nature as new moulds have to be accured to deliver novel designs more frequently. Therefore the mould life is restricted due to the high design mortality rate.
